The Museum was established in the Jubilee Year 2000 at the wish of the Bishop’s Curia, under the impetus of Mons. Salvatore del Ciuco, to preserve and enhance the diocese’s heritage.
Over the years it went through ups and downs, but since 2005 it has been regularly open and has promoted the de facto creation of the new monumental hub (with the Cathedral and the Papal Palace). Set within this broad cultural offering, it has enabled the recovery of spaces important to the city’s history and has become a key cultural institution as well as a reference point for tourists choosing the capital of Tuscia. The museum is divided into three sections (discover the works by clicking on each section):
Archaeological section
Visiting the Museum means retracing the history of the Cathedral Hill and therefore of the city of Viterbo from the most remote times. In the archaeological area you can view Villanovan, Etruscan, Roman and medieval finds. A small excavation test is also on display, carried out during the Museum’s construction works.
Art-historical section
In the art gallery you can discover the art produced in the area starting from the 13th century with the Madonna della Carbonara. The visit also lets you enjoy masterpieces by Benvenuto di Giovanni, the “Crucifixion” traditionally attributed to the great Michelangelo, and the Caravaggist Bartolomeo Cavarozzi, up to works by leading figures of 18th-century Rome such as Domenico Corvi.
The paintings are also included along the guided route, where you can admire, among others, the masterpiece by Giovan Francesco Romanelli.
Sacred art section – treasures of the Popes
The history of these treasures—made so by the skill with which they were created, their beauty and their historical importance—conveys the significance of the Diocese of Viterbo through the centuries.
Here are collected vestments and sacred objects that belonged to pontiffs such as John XXI, pope from 1276 to 1277, and Pius IX, pope from 1846 to 1878. Other precious items include those used by cardinals and bishops, even very ancient ones such as the robe of Saint Boniface from the 12th century. The art gallery also preserves the portrait of Pope Innocent XIII, who was bishop in Viterbo from 1712 to 1719.
Inside the premises there is a large conference hall, also used as a space for temporary exhibitions.
The Museum can also be combined with a guided visit to parts of the Cathedral of St. Lawrence and the Papal Palace.
In addition, services of various kinds are offered to schools as well, designed for different age groups:
guided tours of the Papal Palace;
guided tours of the city of Viterbo;
guided tours of other major monuments in the provinces of Viterbo, Rieti and Rome;
a cycle of preparatory lessons for the guided visit and trips, which can be held either on site or in schools in the province of Viterbo;
cultural projects of 10, 20 or 30 hours on topics related to archaeology, history and art history (mix of classroom hours and field experiences)
The museum is open every day at the following times:
10:00 / 13:00 – 15:00 / 18:00 (winter hours – closed on weekdays Mondays)
