His Biography

A realist figurative painter, he creates his works using organic materials and colours personally prepared by him. Thanks to academic studies and to the great painters of the Baroque and the Renaissance, and as a pupil of Master Sacchi, he rediscovers the ancient secrets of painting techniques such as egg tempera, French soft pastel and gilding, thus establishing a dialogue with the grand past of Western art. His skill in drawing, with an intense stroke, allows him to transfigure images from his inner world into the depicted subjects, which are influenced by the fascination sacred themes hold for the artist. Through the masterful combination of line, light and colour, Marino succeeds in creating works of great aesthetic and spiritual depth.

Antonio Marino was born in Naples in 1976. He attended the State Art High School of Naples, honoured to be a student of great teachers.

During his training, he learned etching, modelling, sculpture and drawing techniques; at the same time he produced works that were included in group exhibitions of the Art High School. He took part in plein-air events in Campania, Calabria, Marche, Liguria and Tuscany.

He continued to expand his artistic knowledge by studying and analysing Caravaggio, Antonello da Messina, Tintoretto, Giorgione, Mattia Preti, Luca Giordano.

He refined his techniques, in particular graphite on paper, soft pastels on fine paper, and oil on canvas, carrying out detailed hyper-realistic research in portraiture.

He created many clay sculptures, starting from bas-relief, illustrating some of the most important passages of the Divine Comedy, as well as sculptures in the round. He also produced terracotta works, depicting female images in a metaphysical style with conceptual messages. He executed depictions of sacred figures in the Naples area, in Calabria and in the Umbrian region. At a very young age he made the news as the winner of first prize, with the award of a gold medal, in the painting section. He received further reviews at the end of the 1990s in Naples, on the occasion of some group exhibitions, published in “Il Mattino” in the regular “emerging artists” section, local newspapers and more.

Thanks to the teachings he received as a student of Master Claudio Sacchi, he in fact rediscovers ancient secrets of Renaissance painting techniques.

He exhibited his paintings at the museum hub in Rende, the “Museum of the Present”, and in many other venues, including international participation in the Deod’Art Festival in Saint-Dié, Strasbourg, as a Hyperrealist Master of Art; in Civitavecchia, selected among the excellences for the 2nd Festival of Figurative Art of Hyperrealism and Portraiture; permanent exhibitions at the “OnArt” art gallery in Florence; and, lastly, the “Michelangelo Buonarroti Prize, 3rd Ed., Seravezza (LU)”. His works are currently on permanent display at the OnArt Gallery in Florence; the works and the artist have been reviewed and recognised internationally, and have been published in many figurative art catalogues, most recently in the prestigious art collection in the Spanish edition “Leonardo 2018”, together with artists recognised beyond the European sphere, with international distribution.

About his Art

Antonio Marino entrusts his feelings to the communicative power of the faces, gestures and gazes portrayed in his works, imbued with a romantic aura, through which he conveys a deep desire to seek simplicity in the small acts of everyday life. The reassuring embrace of a mother for her child, the joyful smile of a serene, carefree childhood, the faces of men and women caught in their natural expressiveness thus soothe the sense of loneliness and conformity of our time and restore the meaning of individual uniqueness.

The artist invites us to reflect on reclaiming human relationships, positive communication and the will to return to an existence nourished by the nectar of harmony and the simplicity of living. In this fully globalized society, where everything is mass-produced and where individuals often tend to emulate one another, we are increasingly becoming the mirror image of a cold, impersonal assembly line, ever more like the one Charlie Chaplin shows us in the famous film “Modern Times”.
We need to feel like subjects again and not objects, leading actors and not sterile extras, setting constructive interaction back in motion in a society where we barely “look each other in the face”. The artist Marino therefore calls us to this kind of shared mission, guiding us toward an artistic reading that places before our eyes what so often inexorably escapes us, through hyperrealist portraiture and the recovery of the concept of beauty as given form. His works place before us “speaking” faces and explicit gestures, as if they were real, channeling us into an intimate interaction that arises with extreme naturalness. Portraits as an “Esperanto in images”, in a non-verbal language, universally recognized.
In Marino’s hyperrealist research, one should not see attention to detail as mere display of technical skill, but as the natural outcome of someone who, with great sensitivity, stops to observe and not simply look, to delve deeper and not merely ascertain, far from hermeticism and without filters. In “Portrait of a Child”, an oil painting, he depicts the serenity of childhood and the spontaneous genuineness of the smile, calling the viewer to recover this dimension of living as an ideal state. The feeling of childhood itself represents a special dimension that all humanity has experienced, yet often seems to have no memory of, as if it had the diaphanous outlines of a dreamlike reminiscence.

Childhood contains sincerity, sweetness, loyalty, spontaneity, purity, a sense of playfulness, looking to the future with enthusiasm and hope, the ability to dream and imagine again. And it seems we can see this child portrayed by our talented artist right before us, and hear his voice and laughter. His unruly curls, a symbol of liveliness, come to life; his big, bright eyes; the chubby little hand raised to his ear; the little face turned toward the observer, naturally bringing the same smile to the viewer’s face.

The laughing child thus becomes the sum of an aspiration for rebirth, for positive growth, for hope in times to come, for the recovery of Pascoli’s poetics of “the little child”, that is, of one who observes with pure eyes, eager to know the world around him. The use of oil paint, Marino’s preferred medium (he also works skillfully with ink, terracotta and clay in sculptural works, and graphite on paper), gives the painting brilliance and vitality, working on the hues with precision and care for every small nuance. The child’s face is strengthened in its being by a background that can be defined as earthy and bare, without any ornament. With this compositional choice, probably influenced by the masters of the past he studied (such as Mattia Preti and Caravaggio), the artist focuses attention on the subject, highlighting nothing in the background that could distract, and bringing out the deeper aspect of the representation also through the use of light and shadow.
The work is also played, in its colors, on the pinks of the complexion, on the child’s sweatshirt, on tones of deep blue, almost tending to black, and light blue, modulated in different shades in the shadows, and on the white placed centrally like a point of light.
The colors of Marino’s palette used here alternate in a balanced way without overpowering one another. The accuracy in the act of painting reveals a technical preparation strengthened by specific studies, making Antonio Marino a well-rounded artist. The drawing base is proof of this, and also represents continuity with tradition, which often, in contemporary art, is lost. The search for given form as such, far from overly closed interpretations, strengthens in his works the social function of art—its being communication and never an end in itself—and thus its destination for a diverse audience. Therefore, this artist can be described as an ideal conciliator of tradition and modernity, through the canonicity of the technique used and a sensitivity that reflects the themes of contemporary debate.
