HIS BIOGRAPHY

Claudio Caldana was born on March 6, 1953, in Povegliano Veronese.

He graduated from the Art School in Verona and attended the Cignaroli Academy in the same city, taking courses in fresco, encaustic and mural painting restoration. He has been painting for 45 years.
The early years were marked by research to find a personal style in which he could recognize himself and stand out. Sailing through a vast sea of opportunities, Caldana landed on the most distinctive techniques: velvets, frescoes, encaustic, gold, light. Details are the true protagonists of every artistic phase of this painter. Woman, faces, bodies, shapes, half-shadows. The essence of femininity is ever-present.
For over 10 years, the artist has been working in the informal and conceptual, with research works, installations, performances and a specific cycle called “Landscapes of the Soul”. Souls outwardly shine and display their purity, hiding the truth within. The strength of the colors chosen for the works and the bold, at times soft brushstrokes conceal this deep contrast.
Over the years Caldana has enriched his résumé with prestigious awards and over 160 exhibitions: in galleries, historic palaces and foundations. Worth recalling the shows in Rome at the Bramante Halls, Palazzo Margani, the International Academy of Modern Art, Palazzo della Ragione in Verona, Villa Gualino in Turin, “Palazzo Bentivoglio” (Ligabue Foundation) Gualtieri, Reggio Emilia, and galleries such as: “Zamenhof” Milan, “Spazziottagoni” in Trastevere, Rome, “Alba” Ferrara, the Modern Art Gallery of Pisa, GAM in Turin thanks to a 3rd Prize at the 4th Biennial, and at the Chiostro del Bramante for the Rome Triennial 2014. Also in many other venues in Italy, Germany, France and various European countries.
Caldana’s whole life revolves around art: he collaborates with galleries, creates murals, carries out small restorations, teaches painting privately and to groups. For 7 years he has taught painting and art history at the Verona District Prison, also visiting schools and beyond with debates on prison and the values of life.

In recent years his attention has also turned to photography, without ever neglecting inner research. The cornerstone of his art, always.

In art, reality often does not coincide with the real, with what is visible and tangible, but with the emotions of consciousness. Entering the atmosphere of Claudio Caldana’s works means entering the most intimate part of ourselves, managing to sense emotions sometimes hidden, sometimes forgotten, yet always alive within us. A play of light and shadow creates a thrill, heightened by the different volumes of the paint on the canvas.
Colour, the matter laid on the canvas, becomes the means through which the artist can leave traces of inner expressiveness and create a dialogue between the viewer and what is being observed. From the centre of the painting there always starts a glimmer of light and a cry of hope, the will to bring out something of our self, our thoughts and the deep images of our mind, often dark and gloomy; a light born from the contrast of tones: from the mix of colours white always emerges, sometimes dirty, sometimes clear, just as human thoughts are clear or confused. On the white rests the red of passion and energy, the black of fear, the blue of serenity, the yellow of warmth and peace.
Different feelings, which at times human beings struggle to express fully; values that are disappearing, overwhelmed by the desire for material well-being, values that rise again, as in an explosion, drawn by the light of hope.
