Gabriella Fabbri was born in Teramo into a family of writers and artists: her grandfather Giovanni was a writer and publisher in Teramo from the late 1800s until 1938, the year the publishing house closed, having issued numerous works by Abruzzo writers and a newspaper, “L’Italia Centrale”; her father Pasquale was an extremely versatile man: writer (winner in 1962 of the Teramo Prize, Abruzzo section), painter, sculptor, set designer, fine connoisseur of Abruzzo history and art, he took an active part in the city’s cultural and artistic life, until his untimely death in 1966.
In this climate of strong artistic and cultural stimulation, from an early age Gabriella felt a marked interest in drawing and painting, which she pursued as a self-taught artist, having attended the Classical Lyceum and graduated in Literature at the University of Chieti with a thesis on “Popular Themes in the Art of the Teramo Area”.
Winner of a competitive exam for the subject of Art History, she taught it until the 2005/06 school year in various upper secondary schools in Abruzzo and in Teramo.
In 1974, at the urging of painter Alberto Chiarini, she took part for the first time in a plein-air painting event in Cerqueto di Fano Adriano, winning a prize. Thus began her artistic activity (as can be seen from the attached CV): the first phase in the 1970s is what may be called the “green period”, in which the artist depicts simplified landscapes with a prevalence of green.
In the 1980s the “blue period” begins: landscape becomes a reflection on the shadow-light relationship and a surrealist expression of reality. This led, in 1987, to a solo exhibition entitled “Beyond the Light”, shown in Teramo in what is now a small permanent gallery: “Spazio 7 – Gabriella Fabbri”, in Via Filippi Pepe, 24.
From 1994 the period of “vivid chromaticism” begins, in which the palette becomes much richer with the inclusion of all colours; the reflection focuses on the theme of the sphere, which becomes a metaphor for the ideal world, giving rise to the second solo exhibition entitled “Conversation”, shown in Rome for the first time in 2000 at the “Palazzo Margutta” Gallery in Via Margutta and more recently (September–October 2007) in Pescara at the Maison des Arts of the Pescara Abruzzo Foundation and in Teramo at the “C. Gambacorta” hall of the Banca di Teramo in December 2007–January 2008.
The exhibition also featured the artist’s first installation, a conversation with Piero della Francesca, to which in the following years three more were added: “Encounter”, “Ecce…monstrum”, “The Accusation of the Eyes”, shown in various events.
From 2000 her artistic activity became much more intense, with group exhibitions both in Italy and abroad, an activity that would be the subject of several solo shows, since it develops through diverse themes and expressive modes.
Of interest is her approach to informal painting, evident in the cycle “Crossing Time”, in which the artist, taking as her inspiration the flow of time through the passing of the seasons perceived chromatically, frees herself from the compositional rigour of the previous period, creating sixty compositions free of any conceptual message and any compositional scheme.
Through this experience, together with her interest in colour—the dominant motif of the artist’s research—she arrives at the cycle “Cosmic Games”, which addresses the theme of energy in the Macrocosm and in the Microcosms, dwelling on the relationships between these two dimensions and bringing to light numerous conceptual insights.
A section of these themes, entitled “Microcosms - Of the Black Square”, was presented in the solo show at Palazzo Cerulli, in May–June 2008; a second section of the microcosms, entitled “Sequences”, was exhibited from 29 October to 30 November 2009 in the Auditorium of the Music High School, former Church of Santa Maria a Bitetto, in Via Stazio, curated by the Concert Society “Primo Riccitelli”.
Over the course of her artistic career, Gabriella Fabbri has received various prizes and recognitions: from the first plein-air events of the 1970s, to the competitions of the 1980s, up to the more recent successes in the second and fourth “Giovan Battista Moroni” trophy in Bergamo in 2005 and 2007, in the competitions promoted by the “Accademia Internazionale Il Convivio” in Giardini Naxos in 2004, 2005, and the prizes won in Messina in 2005 and 2006 in the first and second international competition dedicated to “Filippo Juvara”.
More recently she received the 2009 Women’s Prize for painting from the Federcasalinghe Association of the city of Teramo and placed third in the International Prize for Art and Culture “Ettore Petrolini” organised by the International Neapolitan Academy “Federico II”.
