Her Biography

Giuseppa Matraxia was born in San Giovanni Gemini (AG) on May 1, 1955, and moved to Palermo at the age of thirteen, where she still lives.

Raised in close contact with nature, she carried this interest into later years as she approached the world of art.

From a young age she developed a passion for painting from life, especially for the French, Italian and English landscape painters of the 19th century.

Her love for painting is as great as her love for her land, and her canvases bear witness to it, depicting many of the island’s most striking views, always seeking to capture its most evocative moments.

She has taken part in national and international exhibitions and showcases, receiving awards and recognition from juries and the public on several occasions.

She appears in various art magazines and catalogues.

  Critical Review

Giuseppa Matraxia is an artist from Sicilian soil—Sicily, rich in age-old traditions, unspoilt seas and millennia of culture, a land that holds within its borders immense artistic strength.

Giuseppa Matraxia is a fine example of the transmission of Sicilian art and fully belongs to the large ranks of artists of Trinacria.

It is impossible not to sense in her works a love of belonging and an awareness of her roots.

Light blended with shadow, smoothed across broad-breathing canvases, makes her works particularly refined and part of a poetic-pictorial discourse, for which one could dedicate a few evocative poems of Mediterranean culture.

Matraxia lavishes, with brush and palette, Mediterranean colours: Sicilian places of tradition and history, seas of blue, clear waters lit by a scorching, pure sun; flora rich in colour; flights of seagulls ready to tell stories of love and abandonment; vegetables and fruit—especially citrus—products of a warm, fertile land.

Her seascapes, so clean, so real, so shaped by abundant light, give us all her enthusiasm for the sea, for every rock it embraces. Each colour laid down chisels a nuance, a thought, almost like a sought-after, desired kiss. They reflect the apparent calm of a soothing sea that can become torment for the artist when, once the work is finished, the sea does not take on the desired, intended look.

It is impossible not to be carried away by these visions that speak of daily life, serenity and peace... and we turn to the moon... asking it to accompany us in this sea of infinite space.

In her meticulous painting, the artist Matraxia envelops us with her still lifes—perfect compositions that pay tribute to an avant-garde hyperrealism, never predictable, yet always in vogue for lovers of meticulousness and perfection.

Flowers, fruit, lace and embroidery in realistic forms and colours follow one another in a sequence of splendid, wide-ranging works. In particular, attention lingers on beautiful harmonious compositions, set against a dark background in a sharp chromatic contrast that makes the works precious, enveloping and refined.

Love of art becomes an essential component for any self-respecting artist; in Giuseppa Matraxia’s painting this component is never lacking, and can be seen in every one of her pictorial expressions, in every brushstroke, in every shade of colour.

The light is crafted... never excessive; the refinement of forms is well studied, the lines clearly defined, the colours clean, the technique excellent; everything is thus rendered true to life and, joined to a poetic sensibility and a language of absolute refinement, elegance and meditation, enhances as a whole works of prized technique.

And when emotions are tied to the heart, then everything becomes harmony, melodious music, a catharsis of soul and body that is shaped by desires, dreams, life.

There is no life without nature, and Giuseppa Matraxa’s nature is energetic, clean, rich in images that lead us to boundless, marvellous visual sensations for a land that can give us so much, that is so loved, sometimes even envied, yet also so mistreated.

Art, then, of the utmost respect and of technique well acquired over time, which also becomes a hard-won art, since it is an integral part of a life—that of the Sicilian artist GIUSEPPA MATRAXIA—who gives so much to what she receives from her painting, and offers it to us with her infinite sensitivity.
