About Her Art

You cannot set color aside if you want to truly engage with Katia Papaleo’s painting; her canvases are built from tones, glazes, iridescent shifts and brushstrokes that make the surfaces vibrate with magical, evanescent atmospheres. This love of color reveals training under Benito Trolese, an artist from whom Papaleo also inherits the fantastic settings—at times hallucinatory—that permeate her works. Yet hers is never a painting out of time, a mere exercise in style: the forms, constructed with the sole aid of color, reflect the reality the artist continually confronts, the personal or social dimension she lives with an intensity charged with emotion. It is these emotions, these feelings—carefully filtered through a painting that is first and foremost reflection—that burst, like the colors themselves, onto Papaleo’s canvases, reaching us with the disruptive force of an explosion.

The title of Katia Papaleo’s exhibition “The Box of Emotions” is the exact reflection of her personality: a box overflowing with emotions, colors, reflections of life, moods, loves.
Joy in making, never separated from a bitter thread that always accompanies all true painters. A bitter thread that unsettles in “discussion”, in comparison-clash, where impetuosity and the urgency to speak arrive before reason.
When reflection loosens, expressive instinct asserts itself with strength and conviction. The feeling in the “passionate composition”, distilled by reason and sensitivity, as well as the whole complexity of her work, convinces us. Hers is a rich and exuberant artistic personality.

An always sensitive and evocative use of color is, in my view, the main feature of the poetic unfolding of the figurative production of the artist Katiuscia Papaleo.
The young painter already shows excellent command of technical and psychological gifts, which she transfers onto the canvas, arousing intense emotions in the viewer.
The varied subject matter—ranging from still lifes to feline heads, from winged figures to meditative and melancholy scenes—is wrapped in a dreamlike, evocative atmosphere.
It seems the artist, through a considered expressionism, wishes to reveal the inner life of her soul, which often holds onto dreams and the memory of moments gone by and no longer repeatable, which may also be shared experiences for the viewer.
All this never spills into drama, but often reaches the sphere of a nostalgia that can no longer be renewed, yet is so precise as to be transferred onto the canvas.
