Her Biography
My name is Piera Oria Strobino, artistically known as ORIA. I was born in Cossato (Biella) and live in Cesena.
I am self-taught, so to the question: “When did you start painting?” I should answer that perhaps I was born with colors in my hand…!
I have always been supported by a passion for art.
With curiosity and passion I have experimented with various techniques, and this research is still ongoing.
Among my favorite subjects are nature, the human figure, faces, especially female ones.
In 2008 I completed a very demanding project, lasting more than two years, which resulted in solo traveling exhibitions and the publication of a book collecting the paintings and the historical research on prominent figures in the female world.
The exhibition and the book Being a Woman, which includes 40 paintings and related texts, is in fact an overview of women’s condition through the centuries, with moments of reflection that go beyond ideologies, religion and conventions, yet aims to focus attention on the social role and the peaks of excellence achieved by women in 2,000 years of known history. The exhibition is meant as a tribute to women of value, as well as to the ability, tenacity and female determination that have enabled a conscious and recognized role for these important figures.
The Review
The women of Oria Strobino
From Corriere Romagna, October 15, 2008
The exhibition entitled “Being a Woman” is the result of more than two years of work between historical research and
artistic execution, since Oria intended to create a chronological overview, from prehistory to the present day,
of women’s condition, through figurative scenes and portrait supports paired with explanatory texts
on the biography of the women portrayed or on the historical data related to the figurative development.
Overall, it takes shape as a fresco of the evolution of women’s condition through the centuries.
The exhibition is documented in the corresponding catalog, a true book published by the publishing house
“Il Ponte Vecchio” of Cesena, edited by Melita Vicini Mantero, who presents the works with the
related entries.
Striking from the very first approach are the painter’s graphic skills, as she successfully tackles the difficult
technique of portrait and nude, and shows she can adapt each creation to the historical moment
described, from the ideal mythological composition of Gaia, with an exquisitely fairy-tale flavor, to those marked
by the typical languages of the various civilizations—Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Aryan, medieval—up to the portraits of the
great women who marked the twentieth century, such as Indira Gandhi, Mother Teresa of Calcutta, Rita
Levi-Montalcini.
The exhibition concludes with three paintings: the first two raise the issue of violence against women, while
the last, illustrated by the related entry entitled “Angel or demon?”, invites reflection.
