About His Art

Three cornerstones are the primary characteristics of Ivan Iliev’s artistic work:

his love of detail, his love of nature, and his love of Late Renaissance and Baroque painting.

The subjects Iliev chooses are interpreted and portrayed with affection and meticulous precision. His studies in graphic art and illustration, and his many years of experience in this field, have trained his eye for detail, allowing him to devote himself to his preferred motifs in painting with ease and humor.

His love of nature leads him to engage with landscape and its vegetation. For the artist, plants carry an equally important message: to sprout, to grow, and to pass away.

The artist’s love of the Old Masters’ painting is reflected in his technique and richness of detail. One cannot help but think of Old Masters such as Arcimboldo, or of Dutch still lifes.

In the rich splendor of color and form in Ivan Iliev’s paintings, clear references to his Bulgarian origins can be found. The ornamentation, characteristic of Bulgarian tradition, is something the artist cannot and does not wish to deny or forget. It appears like a guiding thread in his works and is an integral part of his personal style.
